White Oak took over from Yellow Pine as the wood flooring of choice in the mid 20th century, but was quickly surpassed by Red Oak. It had its zenith of popularity in the late 19th and early 20th century during the Arts & Crafts period where it was used for everything from furniture to trim & paneling to flooring. A denser, slightly darker overall wood with a less prominent grain than Red Oak, White Oak is a tan to brown color with no pinks or reds. An oil-based finish will deepen and warm up the color slightly and enhance the grain.

Select & Better Grade (NOFMA):
Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel on the solid planks and a square edge on the engineered planks; this plain sawn grade is virtually free of knots, with a less prominent arching grain pattern than Red Oak.  Select grade White Oak goes fits any decorating concept.

Select & Better Rift Sawn (NOFMA):
Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel on the solid planks and a square edge on the engineered planks; this grade is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. There are no apparent flashes of iridescence in this grade; making it the most uniform and simple look for any formal application.  Rift sawn is sold mixed with quarter sawn in the engineered planks.

Select & Better Quarter Sawn (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel on the solid planks and a square edge on the engineered planks; this grade is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. This grade will contain flashes of iridescence – some large and dramatic, giving it the most striking look for any formal application, particularly reproducing the Craftsman look.  Quarter sawn is sold mixed with rift sawn in the engineered planks.

Country Grade (NOFMA #1 Common):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel on the solid planks and a square edge on the engineered planks; this plain sawn grade has most of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns adding to its popular appeal. This option is an excellent value and is adaptable to a variety of design styles.  Country grade will include some rift and quarter sawn grain in the engineered planks.

Country Grade Rift & Quarter Sawn (NOFMA #1 Common):
Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade combines the character of Country Grade and the straight grain of Rift & Quarter Sawn to fit any design or budget.

Rustic Grade & Better (NOFMA #2 Common & Better):

Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has more of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns than Country Grade in order to attain the longer lengths. This option is an excellent value where character and longer plank lengths are preferred.

Rustic Grade:

Available in solid planks and unfinished only, plain sawn, with more of the naturally occurring wood characteristics remaining such as much larger and more frequent knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns than Country Grade.  This grade of White Oak is suited to a more relaxed setting, particularly where a more antique look is desired.
