Northern Red Oak Flooring

Red Oak is the most popular flooring choice available today, and has been for decades. A hard, durable wood with a prominent grain and a pinkish tan hue, mellowing to gold over time, Red Oak is the standard by which all other flooring options are judged. It is still used extensively for furniture and other applications, but its variety and value make it perfect for any design application. A water-based finish will keep Red Oak brighter longer, while an oil-based finish will deepen the color slightly and enhance the grain.

Select & Better Grade (NOFMA): Northern Red Oak Flooring
Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade is virtually free of knots, with distinctly arching grain and is what most of us think of when we picture wood flooring in the last 50 years. Select grade Red Oak goes with anything.

Select & Better Rift Sawn (NOFMA): Northern Red Oak Flooring
Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. There are no apparent flashes of iridescence in this grade; making it the most uniform and simple look for any formal application.  In the engineered planks, rift sawn grade is sold mixed with quarter sawn.

Select & Better Quarter Sawn (NOFMA):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade is virtually free of knots, with primarily straight, parallel grain lines. This grade will contain flashes of iridescence – some large and dramatic, giving it the most striking look for any formal application.  In the engineered planks, quarter sawn grade is sold mixed with rift sawn.

Country Grade (NOFMA #1 Common):

Available in solid or engineered planks, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has most of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as small tight knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns adding to its popular appeal. This option is an excellent value and is adaptable to a variety of design styles.  In the engineered planks, Country Grade will include some rift and quarter sawn grain.

Country Grade Rift & Quarter Sawn (NOFMA #1 Common): Northern Red Oak Flooring
Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro-bevel; this grade combines the character of Country Grade and the straight grain of Rift & Quarter Sawn to fit any design or budget.

Rustic Grade & Better (NOFMA #2 Common & Better):

Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has more of the naturally occurring wood character remaining such as knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns than Country Grade in order to attain the longer lengths. There may be some open knots and voids that may be cut out or filled.  This option is an excellent value where character and longer plank lengths are preferred.

Wormy Grade (NOFMA #3 Common & Better):

Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has all the naturally occurring wood characteristics remaining such as knots, color and grain variations and scattered worm holes and tracks across its surface. There may be some open knots and voids that may be cut out or filled.  This grade is reminiscent of Antique Wormy Chestnut, although harder and much less expensive!

Rustic Grade (NOFMA #3 Common & Better) Northern Red Oak Flooring

Available in solid planks only, unfinished, or factory pre-finished with a micro bevel; this plain sawn grade has more of the naturally occurring wood characteristics remaining such as much larger and more frequent knots, distinct color variations and varying grain patterns than Country Grade. There will be some open knots and voids that may be cut out or filled. This grade is suited to a more relaxed setting.
